A photo mosaic of Edgar Degas’ painting – “Dancer Tilting” made from images ‘cut’ from paintings by the group known as the Impressionists. The original was painted in around 1883.

Edgar Degas was a French impressionist artist famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers.

Impressionism emerged in France in the 1870s, initially amongst Monet, Renoir, Pissaro, Sisley, Cezanne, Morisot and Degas, and later also Manet and Cassatt. The group were termed the “Impressionists” by the media following an exhibition including Monet’s “Impression, Sunrise”.
